The EGR valve and cooler are located on the lower left rear side of the engine. The side of the valve can been seen looking through the gap indicated by the box in the photo. Foy anyone wanting to attempt this as a DIY, I can confirm it a 6+ hour job, and requires a great deal of patience.
Use the vacuum pump and pump it up to about -20. If you suddenly release the vacuum, and can feel/hear a nice little thunk from the valve, the diaphragm is probably fully opening and closing. If you don't hear or feel it, it could be sticking. What you want to do then is remove the kombi valve from the car.

Here's info from another thread posted by "low fuel". Ok first you are going to need the gaskets to replace the old ones with: EGR gasket : ETKA PART NO: 03G 131 547 F. EGR cooler pipe gasket: ETKA PART NO: 069 131 547 D. They cost £ 6.00 and your local vw/audi parts dept will have them.
